if I could go wherever it was he was really going, I didn’t know what I would have done when I got
there. We both knew, I’m assuming, that sex was not really in the cards. We were barely even playing
cards. So he walked out. And the next morning, in the cafeteria, I told my friends the full account of

still hoped to summon that night’s power again, because up until, say, 11:55 pm, it had been pretty
exhilarating. I had been, in admittedly relative terms, forward with someone I had really wanted to be
forward with. For one night—well, for part of one night—I’d been a lighthouse.
Rylee, meanwhile, having taken only a very brief break, had resumed getting into trouble, and by then
the school had noticed.

able to last so long when the same things that made you mad keep happening—when a mutual friend
